CONVEYOR,ROLLER,GRAVITY

A conveyor with frame mounted rollers which are free to revolve. The items to be handled move because of the force of gravity when the loading end is raised to a level higher than that of the unloading end.

CONVEYOR,WHEEL,GRAVITY

A conveyor with frame mounted wheels which are free to revolve. The items to be handled move because of the force of gravity when the loading end is raised to a level higher than that of the unloading end.

CONVEYOR,BELT

A conveyor with a plain or cleated endless belt which moves on frame mounted carriers.

ELEVATOR,BUCKET TYPE

A nonself-loading apparatus consisting of a continuous line of buckets attached to an endless chain or belt, used for elevating bulk material.

CONVEYOR,DRAG

A conveyor with a trough through which material is pushed by moving flights attached to endless chains.

ELEVATOR EXTENSION,BUCKET TYPE

An apparatus consisting of a continuous line of buckets, attached to an endless chain, for attaching to a bucket type elevator to increase its discharge height or reach.

ACTUATOR,ELECTRO-MECHANICAL,LINEAR

A self-contained power transmitting device designed to convert electrical energy into controlled mechanical force, in the form of linear (straight line) mechanical movement. Comprised of an electrical motor(s), gear box(es), screwjacks, limit switch(es), and such accessories as required for the specific moving and positioning of other components. Excludes hydraulic and pneumatic cylinders and screwjacks.

SUPPORT,GRAVITY CONVEYOR,FLOOR

CONVEYOR KIT,CARGO,AIRCRAFT

A group of items consisting of two or more CONVEYOR, WHEEL, GRAVITY sections with tie down clamps and accessories. It is designed to provide greater ease of loading cargo into the aircraft and also offers a safe method of ejecting the loads during flight.

ROLLER,CONVEYOR

A cylindrical body of hollow construction of which both ends contain bearings and shaft. The bearings may be ball, roller or sleeve type.

ARM,PUSH,CONVEYOR

TRACK,CABLE SUSPENSION

A series of interconnected links, forming a track. Designed to provide protection for the components carried inside the track during travel distances. Uses are found for protecting moving cable in a wide variety of applications as machine tools, robots and manipulator systems, conveyors and warehouse systems, special vehicles and aerial platforms.

LINK,TRACK,CABLE SUSPENSION

An item made in one or more pieces, held securely together by means of a locking pin or other devices. It is a component of a TRACK, CABLE SUSPENSION.

BALL TRANSFER

An item designed to move light and heavy loads with minimum effort. It consists of a larger rotating and swiveling ball mounted and retained on a hemispherical face of small support balls that permit a multi-directional displacement of the load.

TRAILER,PLATFORM,AIRBORNE

A four-wheeled platform type trailer with a coupling at one or both ends, for connecting to trailers and/or towing by a motor vehicle. Designed to be airborne.

TRAILER,PLATFORM,WAREHOUSE

A four-wheeled, platform type trailer with a coupling at one or both ends, for connecting to trailers and/or towing by a warehouse tractor.

TRUCK,DOLLY

A low truck with one or more wheels, rollers, or casters, having either an open or solid platform for moving heavy objects. It does not have superstructure, handles, tongues, stakes, or the like. It may have provisions to permit it to be pulled.

WHEELBARROW

A hand-propelled vehicle for transporting small loads, usually having a single wheel between the ends of a pair of shafts that supports the tray and forms into handles at the other end, with two legs for support when standing alone.

BAR,PRY,WHEELED

An item consisting of a steel or wood handle with a beveled steel end with the point bent slightly upward and extending about six inches beyond, fastened to an axle base having small wheels, which may be electric motor driven. It is used for shifting packages of great weight into position to be handled.

BASKET,WOVEN WIRE,HAND CARRYING

A rectangular-shaped container designed to be carried by hand by a drop or fixed bail handle(s). It may be used on handcarts in supermarkets, on hand truck in material handling or the like.

CART,GENERAL HAULING

A cart designed with a leg or legs for support when standing alone. Excludes TRUCK, HAND, PLATFORM.

TOBOGGAN,CARGO

A toboggan designed to transport supplies, equipment and/or personnel.

TRAILER,RACK,SHEET STOCK

A trailer with an A-shaped rack designed for transporting sheet stock in a vertical position.

ADAPTER KIT,HAND TRUCK

An adapter kit containing items such as cradles, tiedowns, and attaching parts. It is used to brace, block, and/or cushion a specific item on a hand truck. Do not use if a more specific name is available.

SLED,FLAT BED

A sled with a flat load carrying platform without sides, front, or rear panels or end(s). The platform must be of one level construction.

SLED,SCOW TYPE

A sled with a scow type body having integral sides and ends.

SLED,STAKE

A sled having a body with readily removable side(s) and end(s).

COVER,SCOW TYPE SLED

WHEEL,SOLID,NONMETALLIC

A wheel which is cast or molded from a material other than metal. It may have a tread but does not have facilities to mount a tire or a rim. For items which have facilities to mount a tire or a rim see WHEEL, PNEUMATIC TIRE; and WHEEL, METAL TIRE.

TRUCK,LIFT,HAND

A hand-propelled, wheeled vehicle having a mechanical or hydraulic operated lifting mechanism. It is used for lifting and transporting materials. For self-propelled (powered) pallet-type trucks, see TRUCK, PALLET, POWERED; and for self-propelled (powered) skid type (lift platform) trucks, see TRUCK, LIFT, PLATFORM.

WHEEL,SOLID,METALLIC

An item which is cast or molded from various metals, which may be ferrous or nonferrous. It does not have facilities to mount a tire or a rim. For items which have facilities to mount a tire or a rim see WHEEL (1), PNEUMATIC TIRE; and WHEEL (1), METAL TIRE.

TABLE,LIFT PNEUMATIC

A device operated by air actuator. Consist of a cylinder actuator for the lowering and raising of the table. A control is used for up, down or hold positions. May be used for assembly work, packing or loading of conveyers.

TRUCK,HAND

A nonpowered vehicle with one or more wheels, casters, or rollers attached directly to the bottom, a frame, an axle, a deck or a platform. It may have various types of superstructure(s) and/or handles and may include conversion feature(s) (two to four wheel operation) and may have special facilities to assist the operator in transporting loads on stairways. Excludes TRUCK, DOLLY; TRAILER (1) (as modified).

CHASSIS,HAND TRUCK

The frame for a non-powered vehicle upon which are mounted wheels, decks, tow bars, platforms, and other items common to type TRUCK, HAND.

DOLLY,CYLINDER INSPECTION

A vehicle designed to support and propel a person inside an aircraft carrier catapult chamber. It may be pulled through the chamber in either direction by cable or rope and may be equipped with inspection instruments.

TRUCK,LIFT,CYLINDER

A hand propelled, wheeled vehicle having a mechanical or hydraulic operated lifting mechanism. It is used for lifting and transporting cylinder(s). Excludes CART, CYLINDER, MEDICAL.

BRACKET,ADJUSTABLE HAND TRUCK LINKAGE ASSEMBLY

A metallic item designed to be welded to a cross member of the chassis of an adjustable hand truck to provide a means of connecting the adjustable linkage assembly to the chassis.

CAMSHAFT,ACTUATING,TRACK

An item with an integral shaft designed to convert rotary motion into linear motion for the purpose of tilting the track of an adjustable hand truck.

DRAWBAR,ADJUSTABLE HAND TRUCK

A Drawbar designed as an integral part of an adjustable hand truck.

TABLE,LIFT,HYDRAULIC

A device operated by liquid actuator. Consist of a cylinder actuator for the lowering and raising of the table. A control is used for up, down or hold positions. May be used for assembly work, packing or loading of conveyers.

WHEELED UNIT,ARTICULATING,REMOVABLE-RETRACTABLE

A device composed of an articulated chassis equipped with one or more wheels, a height adjustment and fixing brackets. It is designed to be fastened to a container, shelters, machine, etc., to ensure the mobility of these articles. It can be equipped with a steering device, brake and/or suspension. Two elements can be assembled to constitute a dolly trailer.

CART,HYGIENE

An item consisting of materials designed to promote the prevention of transmitting infections. May include a waste receptacle, a removable sign holder, and easy storage access for gloves, masks, tissues, antibacterial hand gel and the like.

TRUCK,LIFT,FORK

A self-propelled, wheeled vehicle, equipped with power driven front or side loading fork, type elevating unit(s). The elevating unit(s) may extend and retract to provide a reaching capability. It is primarily used for lifting, transporting, and stacking. For nonself-propelled, wheeled vehicles equipped with either manual or power driven elevating unit(s), see ELEVATOR, PORTABLE and TRUCK, LIFT, HAND. Excludes TRUCK, LIFT, PLATFORM.

TRUCK,FIXED PLATFORM,POWERED

A self-propelled, wheel type, non-elevating load carrying platform unit.

TRUCK,LIFT,PLATFORM

A self-propelled, wheeled vehicle equipped with an elevating type platform. The platform elevating unit may be power-driven. Primarily designed to be used in conjunction with skid platforms (skids) for handling of skid loaded materials. Excludes TRUCK, LIFT, FORK.

TRUCK,STRADDLE-CARRY

A self-powered wheeled vehicle with a gantry type frame designed to straddle, pick up, and transport material.

TRACTOR,WHEELED,WAREHOUSE

A self-propelled walking or riding type vehicle with or without attachments primarily used for towing trailers and material handling operations on floors and paved surfaces in and around industrial plants, depots, warehouses and terminals. It is generally designed with a short close-coupled wheel base with side and front free of protuberances and with front and/or rear mounted bumper plates to facilitate maneuvering in narrow aisles and similar restricted areas without damage to stored stock. INCLUDES ALL ELECTRICALLY DRIVEN TRACTORS REGARDLESS OF DESIGN. Excludes TRACTOR, WHEELED, AGRICULTURAL and TRACTOR, WHEELED, INDUSTRIAL.

CHASSIS,TRUCK

A self-propelled wheeled vehicle undercarriage consisting essentially of the frame and power train, with or without cab, designed primarily to mount a suitable body for transporting supplies and/or equipment.

FORK,LIFT TRUCK

A one piece, steel arm or prong formed at approximately 90 degree (1.5705 radians) angle; the vertical portion of which attaches to the lifting and lowering mechanism of a TRUCK LIFT, FORK and the horizontal portion acts as a finger to hold the material being handled.

CRANE,FORK LIFT TRUCK MOUNTING

A crane consisting of a boom or rail extension on a frame, which can be secured on the carriage of a fork lift truck in lieu of forks for handling miscellaneous loads that cannot be uniformly boxed or palletized.

HANDLING ATTACHMENT,FORK LIFT TRUCK

A device specifically designed to be used with a fork lift truck for moving and/or handling of items, such as drums, cargo (conex) containers, and the like. This device may replace forks or may be used in conjunction with forks.

FORK LIFT,TRACTOR MOUNTING

A power-driven fork-type elevating unit designed to be mounted on a tractor. May be cable- or hydraulically-operated. Used for lifting, transporting and stacking material.

TRUCK,PALLET,POWERED

A self-propelled, wheeled vehicle having a mechanical or hydraulic operated lifting mechanism (a framework consisting of two forks, each fork having mounted wheel(s) for support of the outer fork ends) primarily designed for horizontal handling of pallets and not intended for high elevating. The lift mechanism raises enough to lift the pallet above the floor only for transporting purposes. May be designed for riding and/or "walking along hand guiding."

PARTS KIT,LINEAR ACTUATING CYLINDER ASSEMBLY

A collection of various o-rings, seals, sleeves, wear rings and gaskets to repair actuating cylinders. May include cylinder and mounting hardware.

An automated, driverless, self-contained, battery driven truck, designed to follow an invisible guidepath. Programmed to automatically stop at designated points for conveyance of mail, processing materials, and the like to specific work sites and/or areas.

BACK REST,LOAD SAFETY RACK

An item designed to act as a rear support for a fork lift when stacking and unloading materials. It is attached to the carriage of a lift truck.

An item designed for limiting the lifting height of a forklift hoist unit and precluding unintentional operation beyond the prescribed maximim lifting height.

OVERHEAD GUARD,FALLING OBJECT PROTECTION

A grid like structure that is positioned above and sometimes behind the vehicle operator to protect the operator from falling objects. This guard can be an accessory to FRAMEWORK, ROLLOVER PROTECTION or can be a complete system with support framework attached to the vehicle's structural frame. Not designed to provide protection for the operator should the vehicle rollover. For rollover protection see FRAMEWORK, ROLLOVER PROTECTION.

BOOT,FORK,LIFT TRUCK

An item generally made of plastic material, which is shoved on and mounted to the horizontal part (prongs) of a FORK, LIFT TRUCK. The boot is designed to protect the material to be handled and the prongs, to prevent the material from sliding and to diminish noise development during the movement, for instance, of metal containers. May include fastening devices.

CONVEYOR,BELT,SELF-PROPELLED

A self propelled apparatus wheel mounted consisting of endless belt moving on frame mounted carriers. It is used for loading baggages and parcels on aircraft or in warehouses. Excludes CONVEYOR, BELT.

ADAPTER,LIFT TRUCK FORK

An adapter designed to be attached to a lift truck fork(s) to facilitate positioning of equipment cases or the like. It may be of swivel construction.

SIDE RACK SET,VEHICLE BODY

A group of SIDE RACK, VEHICLE BODY items.

TRUCK,AIRCRAFT CARGO LOADING-UNLOADING

A truck with an adjustable platform body equipped with free moving rollers, specifically designed to facilitate the loading and unloading of palletized cargo and transporting same between air terminal storage areas and high and low floor cargo aircraft and vice versa. May be equipped with powered conveyor and/or winch(es) for aiding in the loading and unloading of the cargo. An item specifically designed to protect personnel from injury due to contact with the fork ends of a TRUCK, LIFT, FORK.

Additional load, usually steel block or similar, placed on the vehicle to counteract the force or torque working load.

NET,DRAFT COVER

A rope net used for lashing cargo.

NET,SAVE-ALL

A net used in cargo or material loading and unloading operations to catch accidentally dropped items.

SLING,CARGO,NET

A sling fashioned from chain or rope and wrought or woven into meshes, normally used with mechanical equipment to load or unload cargo.

CLAMP,MATERIAL LIFTING

A metal device designed to grip or clamp to a piece of material by means of lever or cam action, and/or with a hand operated screw, and used for hoisting or lifting. Includes means for attaching to a hoist or sling hook.

TONGS,MATERIAL LIFTING

A metal device consisting of two fashioned pieces hinged together at a common axis in such a manner, that when the upper ends of each are pulled together in the act of lifting, the two lower ends fasten to or grip the piece to be lifted, or the upper ends on each are pulled together by means of a tightening screw. Includes means for attaching to a hoist or sling hook.

SLING,ENDLESS

A sling consisting of a single piece of chain, rope, or webbing in the form of a closed loop or circle, with or without attachments. Excludes SLING, DRUM LIFTING.

SPREADER,SLING

A rigid device used to hold sling legs apart at the intermediate and/or lower terminal attachments. Excludes BEAM, HOISTING; BEAM, HOISTING (as modified) and LINK, HOISTING.

SLING,MULTIPLE LEG

A sling fabricated from chain, rope, or rod and consisting of two or more lengths or legs, each having one end secured to a common top attachment, and with or without attachments or built-in loops at the lower ends. It may include SPREADER, SLING, but does not include a BEAM, HOISTING. Do not use if a more specific name applies. Excludes chain assemblies and SLING, DRUM LIFTING. BLOCK,TACKLE

A mechanical device, consisting of a pulley(s) or sheave(s) encased in a shell or frame which may be provided with a means such as a hook, eye, strap, screw, etc., by which it may be attached to an object. It is used to change direction of a running rope and/or to gain a mechanical advantage.

PLATFORM,MATERIAL HANDLING

An item consisting of a flat surface of wood attached to reinforcing cross member (curbs) having four lifting eyes affixed to the corners. It is used for cargo handling between dockside and hold of a ship. Excludes PALLET, MATERIAL HANDLING.

BLOCK AND TACKLE

A mechanical device consisting of one or more tackle blocks with lines, arranged for hoisting or pulling.

SLING,PALLET

A lifting device specifically designed with lifting beams or bars for handling pallets. It may have spreader(s) and protective side nets.

SLING ASSEMBLY,VEHICLE LIFTING

An assembly of slings with spreaders and nets designed for use with a crane or the like for lifting vehicles. The vehicle is supported and held firmly in the sling by the nets which are placed under the wheels to form front and rear wheel cradles when lifted.

SLING,DRUM LIFTING

A sling with rigid legs having an integral drum hook formed at the bottom end of each leg or with flexible legs with a drum hook or tongs attached at the bottom end of each leg. May also consist of a loop threaded through the eyes of two drum hooks arranged to simultaneously engage the chimes on each end of a barrel or drum. Excludes SLING, ENDLESS and SLING, MULTIPLE LEG.

CLAMP,BEAM,RIGGER'S

A fabricated steel item designed to attach to a structural beam flange to permit a temporary, secure purchase point. Usually used in cargo handling operations to drag heavy, bulky items into place in a ships hold by means of tackle block(s). Excludes CLAMP, I-BEAM GRIPPING and CLAMP, MATERIAL LIFTING.

SLING,CARGO,PAULIN

A sling consisting of heavy cotton duck cloth, reinforced around the edges and across the underside with fiber rope which is formed into loops at each corner, to provide means for lifting. It is primarily designed for removing loose debris from the hold of a ship.

BLOCK AND TACKLE SET

A mechanical device consisting of a group of blocks and tackles, which may have attachments such as wire grips, shackles, hooks, rings or the like. It is designed to raise and pull from several directions to or from a given point.

SLING AND WIRE ROPE ASSEMBLY SET

One or more SLING (as modified) and one or more wire rope assembly (ies) for use singly or in combination, designed for miscellaneous material handling operations. It may include a box for carrying and stowage. Excludes CARGO SET (as modified).

SLING,BEAM TYPE

An item consisting of two or more legs or loops, suspended from a BEAM, HOISTING. The legs are fabricated of chain, rope, webbing, rod, or the like, and may include attachments or built-in loops at the lower ends. The item may also include one or more SPREADER, SLING. Do not use if a more specific name applies.

BEAM,HOISTING

A rigid item which is at least three times as long as it is high. It includes an eye(s), ring(s), hole(s), loop(s), or the like, to facilitate hoisting and is designed to permit attaching such items as sling legs, shackles, rods, and hooks at two or more points. It may include attachments, but for items including sling legs, see SLING, BEAM TYPE. Do not use if a more specific name applies, such as BEAM, HOISTING, AIRPLANE SMOKE TANK; and BEAM, HOISTING LIQUID GAS TANK. Excludes LINK, HOISTING.

LINK,HOISTING

A rigid item which is less than three times as long as it is high. It includes an eye(s), ring(s), hole(s), loop(s), or the like, to facilitate hoisting and is designed to permit attaching such items as sling legs, shackles, rods, and hooks at two or more points. May include mounting hardware such as bolts, screw, washers and the like. Excludes SPREADER, SLING. See also BEAM, HOISTING. ADAPTER,HOISTING

An item usually rigid in construction designed to be attached to another item to adapt it to an eye, ring, loop, or the like, for hoisting. For items designed to be used for hoisting and also provide accommodations for adapting a jack to an aircraft jacking point, see ADAPTER, AIRCRAFT JACKING POINT. Excludes BOLT, EYE; and SLING (as modified).

SLING,SHIPPING AND STORAGE CONTAINER

A sling consisting of an I-beam, specially designed hooks, clamps, cables, and/or chains, and thimbles, specifically designed for handling a SHIPPING AND STORAGE CONTAINER (as modified), with or without contents.

HOOK BLOCK ASSEMBLY

A mechanical device which may consist of a group of items such as side plate(s); spacer(s); bearing(s) nut(s); trunnion; shaft; pin(s), and the like. A hook and safety latch is always provided. This assembly attaches to the cable of most hoisting type devices to provide lifting and/or pulling capabilities.

SLING,EYE

An item made of strap, rope, webbing, or the like, specifically designed to hold securely something being hoisted, lowered, carried, dropped, or suspended. These items are characterized by a loop or eye at both ends. Excludes items of a single lentgth of material with fittings. See also WIRE ROPE ASSEMBLY, SINGLE LEG; FIBER ROPE ASSEMBLY, SINGLE LEG; and STRAP (as modified).

HOUSING,HOOK BLOCK ASSEMBLY

A metallic item designed to accommodate, support and/or enclose the interior parts of a HOOK BLOCK ASSEMBLY such as sheaves, ball bearings and bolts. Hook mounting features or similar suspension devices are included.

WEBBING ASSEMBLY,SINGLE LEG

A sling fabricated from a single length of webbing termination at each end in a built in loop or attachments. See also CHAIN ASSEMBLY, SINGLE LEG; FIBER ROPE ASSEMBLY, SINGLE LEG and WIRE ROPE ASSEMBLY, SINGLE LEG.

FORK,PALLET LIFTING

A fork-type unit consisting of one or more prongs and having facilities for attaching to a separate power source (such as a crane or the like), designed for handling (palletized) material.

SLING SET,MULTIPLE LEG

An item consisting of two or more SLING, MULTIPLE LEG.

BEAM,HOISTING,SHIPPING AND STORAGE CONTAINER

A rigid item specifically designed for handling a SHIPPING AND STORAGE CONTAINER (as modified), with or without contents. See also SLING,SHIPPING AND STORAGE CONTAINER. Excludes BEAM,HOISTING and BEAM,HOISTING,GUIDED MISSILE.

ADAPTER KIT,HOISTING

An item consisting of two or more ADAPTER,HOISTING and attaching hardware.

CRANE,JIB

A crane in which the hoisting apparatus is supported by a trolley which runs on a projecting arm or jib which, in turn, is attached to a wall or wall tracks, or stationary or revolving pillar, or column.

CRANE,OVERHEAD TRAVELING

A crane in which the hoisting apparatus is supported by a trolley running on an overhead track, on girders which are affixed to overhead and trucks at both ends.

CRANE,GANTRY REVOLVING

A crane in which the hoisting apparatus is located in the crane cab with the hoisting lines running over a boom to ground level. The crane is supported by a structural gantry-type framework of variable height which may be stationary or mobile mounted. The gantry is generally constructed to provide a portal clearance for vehicles operating under the crane.

DERRICK,GUY

A derrick consisting of a single spar or mast set on end and secured by guy wires at the upper end, having fastened to its lower end a boom or jib carrying a hoisting tackle at top of boom for raising and lowering heavy weights. The boom is so arranged that it may be raised or lowered at different angles or swung horizontally. The hoisting unit is generally not an integral part of this device but may be mounted any distance from the derrick.

DERRICK,STIFF LEG

A derrick consisting of a spar, mast, or A-frame set on end and usually supported at the bottom by two horizontal spars or sills, with inclined beams running from end of sills to mast to form a triangle. A boom is fastened to the lower end of the mast or of the sills. The boom is so arranged that it may be raised or lowered at different angles or swung horizontally. The hoisting unit is generally not an integral part of this device but may be located any distance from the derrick.

CRANE TRUCK,WAREHOUSE

A crane which is a compact unit with a short turning radius, primarily designed for use in confined areas.

WINCH,GYPSY

A mechanical device having a revolvable horizontally mounted head(s) or spool(s) (gypsy head) around which one or more turns of rope must be taken for exerting pulling power. The device may also have a vertically mounted head(s) but must not contain a drum(s) on the periphery of which a rope, line or chain is secured. See also WINCH, DRUM (as modified).

WINCH,DRUM,POWER OPERATED

A power operated mechanical device having a horizontally mounted revolvable drum(s) on the periphery of which the end of a rope, line, or chain is secured for exerting a raising, lowering, or pulling motion. The device may also contain a revolvable head(s) or spool(s) (gypsy head) around which one or more turns must be taken for exerting pulling power. See also WINCH, GYPSY. It may include a power unit. Excludes those items designed for mounting on self-propelled vehicles.

CAPSTAN

A mechanical device containing a revolving head or spool, vertically mounted, around which one or more turns of rope must be taken for exerting pulling power. The capstan may contain an auxiliary head or spool.

HOIST,CHAIN

A device designed to be suspended above deck, floor or ground level having one or more revolving whelped wheels over which a chain is passed for the purpose of raising or lowering a load. May be suspended so as to travel on a fixed track.

HOIST,WIRE ROPE

A device designed to be suspended above deck, floor or ground level having one or more revolving steel grooved drums around which wire rope is wound for the purpose of raising or lowering a load. May be suspended so as to travel on a fixed track.

WINDLASS

A base or deck mounted device having a revolvable whelped wheel(s) (wildcats) over which a chain is passed for raising and lowering a load. The device may have a revolvable head(s) or spool(s) (gypsy or capstan head(s)) around which one or more turns of rope must be taken for exerting power.

A lattice-type metal structure with facilities designed for attaching to the center of a crane boom to increase its length.

BOOM JIB,CRANE

A steel structure designed for attaching to the upper end of a crane boom, containing sheaves over which the lifting cables operate. Its primary function is to add to the stability and reach of the boom.

BOOM,HOIST SUPPORT

A long spar, beam or A-frame structure, to support a hoist.

OUTRIGGER,CRANE

Steel members for inserting in the rear or center of the chassis on trucks or cruiser mounted cranes or crane-shovels to provide a means of adding stability to the crane or crane-shovel when in operation.

GIN,POLE

A device, such as a bracket or boom, designed to be temporarily attached to a pole as a support for block and tackle. It is used to raise and lower transformers and the like. It may include block and tackle.

WINCH,DRUM,HAND OPERATED

A manually operated mechanical device having a horizontally mounted revolvable drum(s) on the periphery of which the end of a rope, line, strap or chain is secured for exerting a raising, lowering, or pulling motion. The device may also contain a revolvable head(s) or spool(s) (gypsy head) around which one or more turns must be taken for exerting pulling power. See also WINCH, GYPSY.

RUNWAY,OVERHEAD CRANE

An assembly of wood and/or steel, consisting of upright stanchions and braces supporting parallel rails or ways on which the bridge of an overhead type crane can be moved at will along a horizontal plane.

TRESTLE,HOIST,PORTABLE

Consists of two A-frame assemblies mounted on casters and joined at the top with a metal cross member(s), forming a bridge. Generally used to support a hoist.

CRANE,FLOOR,PORTABLE

A boom type or trestle type crane mounted on wheels and/or casters, manually propelled and equipped with an integral power or manually operated hoisting mechanism. It is used for lifting, loading and stacking materials.

PILLAR AND BOOM,JIB CRANE

An apparatus consisting of a straight column or pillar and a projecting arm or boom designed to accommodate a hoisting mechanism. It does not include hoisting mechanism.

CRANE,BRIDGE TRAVELING

A crane in which the hoisting apparatus is supported by a trolley which runs on an overhead track, or bridge, which, in turn, is supported either by ground level end trucks running on rails or on floor level wheels.

LINING,FRICTION

A fibrous and/or metallic material with or without binders and/or compounds, cut or molded to a specific size. It may be a segment or a complete lining. It is usually designed to be fastened to a shoe, disk, band, cone, or the like, but may be installed without fastening. It provides a friction surface for transmitting, retarding, or stopping motion. FAIRLEAD,ROLLER

An item consisting of a framework with rollers (exclude flanged) fitted therein, so mounted as to provide an opening through which lines are passed. It is used to provide protection from chafing when oblique pull may occur, and/or to change direction of lines.

An item consisting of a framework with a grooved wheel or wheels, including flat surfaced wheels with flanges, fitted therein, so mounted as to provide an opening through which lines are passed. A power-operated hoisting device, designed for mounting on a commercial or military type truck. It is used primarily for picking up, carrying and automatic dumping of material handling containers.

BOOM,CRANE

A metal structure, built as a single unit having a fixed length or composed of two or more units adjustable to various lengths, designed for attaching to a crane or crane-shovel basic unit, the top being fitted with one or more sheaves through which wire ropes are passed to raise or lower a hook, various types of buckets, grapples or other attachments in conjunction with the crane or crane-shovel basic unit when used in excavation or material handling operations.

TROLLEY,MONORAIL

An item used for transporting material from one location to another by means of an overhead track, beam, cable, or similar method. The trolley consists of either a single wheel or set of wheels, the wheel frame, and a device for transporting the material to be relocated. The transporting device may be an arm which is directly attached to the material or a basket, sling, or the like. ELEVATOR,FREIGHT

A car, a platform, a boxlike compartment, a basket or cage, complete with hoisting mechanism and controls, installed in a hoistway for conveying freight to and from different floor levels.

CATCH MECHANISM,EMERGENCY ARRESTING SYSTEM,ELEVATOR CAGE

A system component installed on elevator cages as a safety device. The catch mechanism is designed to prevent, by braking action, sudden falling or plunging of the elavator cage in case of elavator malfunction.

PALLET,MATERIAL HANDLING

An item consisting of a platform(s) designed primarily for moving material by fork-lift trucks. An item consisting of two steel or wood side rails held together by steel braces, fitted with steel hooks at one end and with the other ends beveled. It is used for unloading barrels or cylindrical objects from motor truck to ground level, or bridging from truck floor to loading deck.

An item designed to hold a drum, barrel, or similar liquid container in an angled position (other than 90 degree) suitable for drainage. It may or may not have wheels and/or casters for moving the rack from place to place. For items designed to move the drum/barrel see TRUCK, HAND, (as modified).

A cylindrical body, either solid or hollow, to be placed under an item to facilitate its moving.

A rigid item usually made of steel or lightweight metals, designed to span a distance between loading docks or platforms and vehicle entry ways. Excludes RAMP (as modified).

SUPPORT SET,STACKING,MATERIAL HANDLING PALLET

A group of items assembled for use on standard pallets to permit tiering of PALLET, MATERIAL HANDLING containing items or loads of irregular shapes or sizes with subsequent saving of space. Consists of a U-shaped device having an angle steel base plate with two rigid tubular steel uprights firmly attached at either end. The base plates are equipped with spring steel friction clamps for mounting on the end stringers of the pallet. The top bars are of angle steel equipped with firmly attached steel sleeves which fit over the tubular uprights of the base to form the top of the frame and to support succeeding pallets. The top bar has an inverted V-brace at either end to prevent slipping of succeeding pallets. May be disassembled for storage.
